TOPIC: Rosaline approaches Romeo and Juliet when they are first meeting at the party. Although Rosaline claimed to not have feelings for Romeo in the past, she actually liked him all along; she was just worried about what her family would think if they were together. She is jealous that Romeo is flirting with such a beautiful girl (Juliet), so she confronts the two of them.

Romeo:
[To Juliet] If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, this gentle sin is this,
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

[Enter Rosaline]

Juliet:
Good pilgrim, you do wrong your ha-

Rosaline:
[Interrupting] Oh Romeo, who is this woman with whom you speak?

Romeo:
[Angrily] Rosaline?
I really would not like to speak with you right now.
Anyway, who the lady is does not concern you!
Please leave me be.

Rosaline:
Romeo! Why doth thou speak to me in such a harsh tone of voice?
In the past, thou hath shown me only unconditional love!

Romeo:
You do not understand.
I no longer feel the passionate love I used to feel for thee.
I do not wish to speak with thee any longer!
Leave right this instant.

Rosaline:
Oh I certainly shall leave
If you simply tell me, Romeo, who this lady is
On who you are doting.

[she points at Juliet]

Juliet:
Why, my name is Juliet.

Rosaline:
Juliet you must stay away from my Romeo or I s-

Romeo:
[With a look of shock on his face] What do you say, Rosaline?
My Romeo?

Rosaline:
Yes, that is what I said.
Oh my cheeks flush at simply the thought of you and I together.
I love thee more than thou shall ever know, Romeo.

Juliet:
[In tears] Romeo, doth thou love Rosaline?
Oh, I thought that I had finally found the perfect man for me
When I first laid eyes on you.
I cannot believe this.

[Juliet storms away angrily]

Romeo:
[Grabbing Juliet by her arm] Please do not leave, my love!
I do not understand Rosaline’s sudden love for me.
Honestly, ere I did love her unconditionally
But my feelings changed completely when I first met you, Juliet.
Thou art the only woman I want to be with, and I want to be with you forever.

Juliet:
[Wiping away the tears] Oh, Romeo!
I would love to be with you forever as well.
My love for thee grows stronger with every breath I take.

[Exit Rosaline. She is infuriated by what she has just witnessed]

Romeo:
Oh, Juliet
Thou art so very kind.
I best be going now, though, if thou doth not mind.
I must speak to Rosaline now before things get out of hand.
I shall be back very soon.
Until then my love.

[Exit Romeo]

[Romeo approaches Rosaline]

Romeo:
Hello, Rosaline.

Rosaline:
Hello, Romeo. I have much to tell you.
I doth love thee, and I always have.
Whilst you were doting on me I never confessed to you my feelings,
For I feared what people would think of me.
Thou knowest that I am sworn to chastity
And to break such a promise would ruin my name in this town.

Romeo:
Rosaline, none of that matters to me anymore.
I have found a new love, Juliet, and she is perfect.
I absolutely love her, and nothing will ever change that.

Rosaline:
Why, I understand how much you love this woman.
Thou were fond of me, though, far before you had even met Juliet.
Oh darling Romeo, would thou please be mine?

Romeo:
Rosaline, thou knowest me far too well. The foolish me.
As I am sure thou hast assumed, the foolish Romeo would feel quite conflicted right now.
Having to make a choice between two beautiful women would overwhelm his foolish brain.
Rosaline, I am no longer foolish. I know that my heart is set on Juliet, and I know that it shall forever be.
Get out of my sight, Rosaline. I am no longer playing games with either of you.

First, I think that you could substitute thee or thou for many of the "you"s. Also I feel that Romeo would not be so harsh to Rosaline when he tries to get her to leave. He used to be in love with her so I think that he wouldn't suddenly love Juliet
and be mean to Rosaline. In addition, I would maybe consider changing the reason for Rosaline not sharing her feelings. I think that because she was afraid of what her parents might think is a little weak because so much of the play already revolves around what parents think. Maybe it could be she was guilty because she had sworn to virginity. I really like the stage directions, I feel like they are realistic and well timed. All in all though I was very impressed and look forward to seeing where your idea will go. Bernese Mountain Dog

I really like your added scene. It adds more to Romeo and Juliet's love. It shows how Romeo is not just falling for every girl he sees; Juliet is special. The end where he says that he is no longer foolish just understates your message. The thing I would change is Juliet's exit. It seems a little abrupt, since they were just very much in the moment. Maybe she wants to give Romeo some time with Rosaline, it just feels a little awkward. I really like your idea, and I think it works well with the rest of the play, finishing off a story line that Shakespeare left without any real closure. Yorkshire Terrier

Thank you! Your comments are really helpful:) Why does Romeo saying he is no longer foolish understate my message though?

I think it understates your message that Romeo isn't falling for Juliet because he is stupid.

The added scene is very intense! I was wondering if Rosaline would really do all of this though. Considering she "hath Dian's wit", I'm not so sure she would suddenly become a jerk. One other thing was that I'm not sure Juliet would be begging Romeo to live with her forever right when they are first meeting. Lastly, in Romeo's last paragraph I think when he says "the foolish me," it sounds a little choppy and could be better expressed through saying "How foolish of me." Overall, a job well done as this scene brings a new side to what the audience thinks of Rosaline as well as an added step in establishing Romeo and Juliet's love. It shows a gross side of Rosaline that ends up making Romeo realize even more that he loves Juliet and not Rosaline. teacupchihuahua

Okay. Thanks!
